The Great Legacy of Nellai Peria Lala Corner Sweets at Gandhipuram, Coimbatore was started in the year 1967. Originally it was named Sri Muruga Villas Lala Sweets. Situated in the corner at the end of Dr. Nanjappa road and beginning of Cross Cut Road, the concern started with the joint effort of Three Brothers from Tirunelveli. Among the three brothers, the middle brother, Mr. Shanmugam Pillai had located the site for running the sweet shop on rental basis. This was done with the help of some prominent persons and officials. Due to Mr. Shanmugam Pillai’s friendly nature and helping tendency he received support from all areas.
After beginning the shop, Mr. Shanmugam Pillai had brought his elder and younger brother with their families to settle down in Coimbatore. Together as a joint family, they lived in a rented house at 3rd street gandhipuram. From there they manufactured the famous “Halwa” and other varieties of sweets and savories. During their early days of business, the three brothers worked hard, with the able support from their sister’s sons. They gradually developed the business, amidst heavy competition.
As the business gradually developed, and as part of development, they constructed a Lodge and named it “SHONA”. It was built with the vision to attract people to stay in a decent, comfortable and homely environment at an affordable price. It is still among the best lodges in Coimbatore city. Due to dedication to work and humble personality, of the three brothers, the business soared with the blessings of the almighty. Suddenly at this stage, the youngest of the three brothers, Mr. Velayutham Pillai passed away in the year 1981. After this tragic loss, Mr. Shanmugam Pillai, and his elder brother consoled themselves and carried their hard work with grit and determination.
Mr. Shanmugam Pillai was a god fearing man and a great philanthropist. He loved to help the needy people, regardless to cast, creed or religion. Yet another tragedy took place in the life of Mr. Shanmugam Pillai, when his only son, Mr. Siva Kumar died in the year 1988. Mr. Shanmugam Pillai was totally shocked and lost all the interest in personal and business activities. But, due to overwhelming support from the family, friends and well wishers, he returned back to normalcy soon after.
